PROJECT MANAGEMENT

You need a PROJECT MANAGER when creating or modifying your product finish.

The role of the PRODUCT or BRAND MANAGER is well positioned to function as the Project Manager. These roles need to maintain a balance between cost and performance, while building a brand. That is a perspective that provides the commitment needed to coordinate this type of project.

The Project Manager needs the support of management and the help of all stakeholders.

  • First, the Project Manager must be empowered by top management to do the job. It is important to recognize that a paint specification is not at the top of everyone’s “To-Do” list. Without top management’s ongoing support requests for information will be ignored, meetings skipped and the project will flounder and eventually fail.

  • Second, the Project Manager will need help from department heads. Each Department Manager or critical Stakeholder must take the time to reveal their issues pertaining to the product finish. Without everyone’s open and honest input implementation of the specification will fail as it encounters undisclosed requirements.

  • Finally, the Project must be given sufficient time. Download the “Project Timeline” document for help in scheduling resources and establishing a timeline.

If your goal is to integrate specific changes into your existing process, you should create a team led by the person responsible for integrating the change.

For example, Let’s say that the Paint Line Supervisor has been told by a vendor that he can increase the speed of the conveyor line if he increasing the temperature of the drying oven.

The Project Manager’s first objective is to complete a Project Definition Form. The Project Definition includes a flow chart of current practices and narrative summarizing key findings based on interviews with employees critical to the finishing process.

A Project Definition Form (PD) is started by the manager. The PDF is available in two forms.

  1. FORM PDF-NEW is used to create a specification when a lot of changes are being made. A new product or a major change in the process or performance requirements justify using FORM PDF-NEW.

  2. FORM PDF-REV is used to initiate revising an existing specification. This process can also be used to document current manufacturing procedure and assumed performance standards.

Both forms can be downloaded without cost from the resource page.
