When paint dries the VEHICLE (Water or Solvent) evaporates. The BINDER and PIGMENT make up the VOLUME SOLIDS, which is expressed as % of the total volume. For example, the volume solids may be 50%.

PAINT CONTAINS THREE PRIMARY TYPE OF INGREDIENTS: 1

  • BINDERS, also called resin, turns from a liquid to a solid and bonds to the surface like a glue.

  • PIGMENTS are sold particles that serve many functions. The most obvious benefits are color and opacity.

  • VEHICLES, simply stated, are various types of solvents used to reduce the paste created when BINDERS and PIGMENTS are combined.
